What is an AI agent harness?

An AI agent harness is the software around an AI model that manages the loop of model calls, tool use, and feedback. It controls what information the model receives, which actions it may take, and how context carries forward as the task progresses.

When you ask an agent to fix a bug, it may require several rounds of changes and checks. It may read files, edit code, run a test, review the result, and make another change if the test fails. The harness manages this sequence and, in systems that use multiple agents, can also coordinate their work.

What an AI agent harness does

The model generates responses and can request tool actions. The harness connects those requests to the working environment and brings relevant results into the next model call. Depending on its design, it can also enforce permissions, request human approval, and set limits on how long the agent continues.

For a coding task, a failed test provides new information. The harness can return that output to the model, which may propose another edit. A successful test provides evidence for review; it does not prove that the change is correct in every situation.

Why context matters across multiple steps

As a task grows, the conversation can accumulate code, tool outputs, and earlier decisions. The harness manages what stays in the model’s context, what gets summarized, and what is stored outside the conversation for later use.

For a bug fix, that might mean keeping the original request and latest test failure available while storing a longer execution log separately. These choices affect the information available for the next decision.

How faster inference helps the agent loop

Inference is the process of running the model to produce an output. Planning, reviewing a result, and retrying can each involve another model call. When those calls depend on previous results, their waiting time accumulates.

Reducing that delay can leave more room for checks and recovery within the same time budget. Where the application supports previews and user feedback, shorter waits can also make it easier to steer the work while it is happening. The benefit depends on the model, task, tools, and harness design.

That is why inference speed matters for the agent workflows we support at Cerebras. Faster model responses create an opportunity to spend time on useful verification; speed alone does not guarantee a better result.

What to measure beyond model speed

A browser action, test suite, or external tool can still take time. As model calls get faster, those steps can account for a larger share of the remaining wait. Faster inference does not directly speed up the tools themselves.

When evaluating an agent, measure the complete task: time spent in model calls and tools, whether checks pass, and where a person needs to intervene. The harness is where those pieces come together.

Performance comparisons are based on third-party benchmarking or internal testing. Observed inference speed improvements versus GPU-based systems may vary depending on workload, configuration, date and models being tested.
