A quick breakdown of what disaggregated inference is, why AWS partnered with Cerebras on it, and why NVIDIA paid $20B to acquire Groq to offer the same architecture. The short version: when you send a prompt to an LLM, the model does two completely different jobs: Prefill: reads your whole prompt at once. Needs raw compute. Decode: writes the answer one token at a time. Needs fast memory. Running both jobs on the same chip means they compete. The fix is to split them: have pre-fill on one set of chips, decode on another. That's disaggregated inference.
